A Tale of Two Posts
Let me tell you about two very different posts I’ve shared recently—both of which taught me the same important lesson about marketing.
First, we had a viral LinkedIn post that racked up nearly 1 million views. The post flat out blew up and it felt like I hit the content jackpot.
But here’s the thing: after all that attention, how many clients came from it? Zero.
Now, contrast that with another post I shared.
Earlier this year, we casually posted a simple photo on Facebook from our old downtown office. It wasn’t flashy and it certainly didn’t go viral.
But within a few hours, a neighboring business reached out, and we ended up securing a new client.
Here are the actual numbers:
127 impressions
16 comments
1 lead
1 new customer
This modest little post had real impact.
It got in front of the right person at the right time, and it turned into business.
We’ve seen this same story play out again and again with clients. Last year, a client of ours had an Instagram reel with over 25 million views.
You’d assume that level of attention would result in something big, right? Nope.
It didn’t produce a single new lead.
Fast forward a few months later, and the same client sent out a simple newsletter to their email list.
It didn’t get millions of views. But it reached the right person and it led to a six-figure deal.
Here’s the takeaway:
It’s not about how many people see your content, it’s about who sees it.
Why Focusing on Views Can Mislead You
When you get caught up in the numbers, it’s easy to think that success is all about getting thousands or millions of views.
But that misses the bigger picture.
Views, likes, and shares are vanity metrics. They don’t always translate to business growth.
The more important question is who’s seeing your content.
Are they the right people? Are they potential customers?
A million views from the wrong audience won’t do much for your business, but a targeted message to the right people can make all the difference.
One of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned in content marketing is this: Consistency wins.
That viral LinkedIn post was fun. But the real results come from showing up consistently with content that speaks directly to the people you want to reach.
Over time, this creates trust, builds relationships, and drives real business.
Create a steady flow of content that keeps you top of mind for your ideal audience.
When you do that, the results compound over time.
Focus on Who, Not How Many
Don’t waste your time chasing vanity metrics.
Instead, focus on building real, lasting connections with the people who matter to your business.
Don’t get distracted by the numbers.
Real success comes when you reach the right audience and serve them with value, day in and day out.
